Yesterday Jaap from Nieuwegein parked his car during the evening rush hour. This brings him to the intermediate score of 50,000 cars that ‘No Spits Today’ did not drive during the evening rush hour. Jaap is one of more than 2,700 participants from the Utrecht region who are taking part in No Spits Today. They regularly leave their cars parked during the evening rush hour and save up for gifts. Non-participants in turn benefit from the extra space available on the road. Spitsmijder Jaap: “I like the fact that I have won a prize, but I even like the fact that I can cycle so often. I hope I can still do this a lot!”
Daily 1000 cars from the evening rush hour
No Spits Today is an initiative of Goedopweg, the partnership of governments and employers to keep the Utrecht region accessible. On average, there are currently 1,000 rush hour avoidances per evening in the region. On some days, this increases to more than 1,500. The number of 50,000 will therefore be further increased in the coming months.
Saving for gifts
Motorists who avoid Utrecht Centrum, Utrecht Science Park/De Uithof & Rijnsweerd and Amersfoort-Noord during the evening rush hour (15.00 – 19.00 hours) will be rewarded for this. Participants in the project can save up for gifts that match the alternative they choose. For example, discounts on pedelecs, credit for public transport or discounts on items that can be used to work from home.
Participating in No Spits Today
The project is open to motorists who regularly drive out of Utrecht Centre, Utrecht Science Park/De Uithof & Rijnsweerd and Amersfoort-Noord in the evening rush hour. A traffic survey was carried out to determine how often motorists drive here. Participation is still possible. Interested parties can register via the website of No Spits Today: www.nospitstoday.nl.
